How much do most liberals even know about conservative beliefs?

I think that fear is the primary conservative motivator. They're afraid of change, afraid of people who don't remind them of themselves, afraid of ideas that challenge their conventional wisdom. They want to go back to an imaginary, ideal past depicted by Leave It To Beaver and The Andy Griffith Show.
