My dog keeps waking up from his sleep like he is frightened from a nightmare,?

my dog keeps waking up from his sleep like he is frightened from a nightmare,when he sleeps he is usually silent sometimes he wimpers but then he wakes up on his own acting scared and thrashing around. can dogs have nightmares if so what can i do if not what could be wong with him ,
