Tamil Nadu has more than 2500 Shiva temples.What is your spiritual view on the significance of so many temples?

Ancient rulers of Tamizh Nadu, the Cholas, Pandyas, Pallavas etc who built most of these temples were patrons of Lord Shiva and Shaivite beliefs reached its peak during their tenure. Spiritually, it may be understood that these dynasties were 'god-fearing' and built massive temples as means to redemption from sins, even if a thought occurred to them that they sinned in some way or the other. It may also be noted that the temples built by them are great monuments of architecture which have stood the test of time and even today, it is quite a task to built such massive and intricate monuments. But do you see any palaces of Cholas or Pandyas or Pallavas which are as massive as the temples they built. Hardly any. That is evidence enough of the spiritual inclination of the rulers of these dynasties.
