Is Winnipeg a safe city to study and earn?

I am moving to Winnipeg to study at the university of Winnipeg, my only concern else then the dreaded winters is the safety! How safe is the city because I've read innumerable articles about the incidents of robbery and homicide in the city. Is the rate of violent crimes too high? Is it safe for me to come in that part of the country?
