What's wrong with my friend and can I do anything to help?

I found the best way to get a friend who won't talk about their problems is to get them to talk to you about yours. Think of a problem you have, that doesn't involve him, and ask him for advice. It gets him talking about your issues and then see if maybe he'll open up. This generally works, but sounds to me you have some work to do.
