Why do believers attribute to God the personality of a cruel despot?

Very well said. You have to remember that in the Bible it states that 'God' killed 25 million people - that is the basis of religion. And as children starve in Africa, people suffer and die of disease, natural disasters, etc... this all powerful, all loving God people worship does nothing to help.
